house dayne and their radness

this post was inspired by the lil house manderly meta/badassery illustration by remusjohnslupin 
i dont think i make it any secret that house dayne is my favourite house (along with martell but they get adequate appreciation so i am pleased with that)

but i love the daynes alot (ahem blog title and domain ahem)
so i am going to educate u all

((as far as spoilers go, there will be none apart from a few under gerold dayne which i will alert u to, as all we know about the daynes happened before the first asoiaf book and edric dayne was cut from the tv show))

WE DONT KNOW THEIR WORDS so that leaves it open to much headcanoning potential (i personally like twinkle twinkle lil star) however we do know their sigil which is a shooting star above a white sword over a violet background!!! rad huh
stars and the colour purple are kinda their thing as u will see
house dayne’s seat, starfall, is located on a small island among the red mountains in western dorne, above the torentine river where it meets the summer sea
 ptheres a tower called the palestone tower (or palestone sword depends what ya look at) which ashara dayne jumped from (their cadet branch’s seat is a lil northeast of starfall and is called high hermitage)
its pretty ancient, it goes back ten thousand years and there are at least one cadet branch of daynes, the daynes of high hermitage (it’s also possible house jordayne of the tor traces descent from house dayne in a similar way to house karstark tracing their descent back to a younger stark)
they have a longstanding feud with house oakheart of the reach
they have a house greatsword named dawn BUT there is one different with their greatsword and other greatswords: its not made out of valyrian steel, but actually FORGED FROM THE HEART OF A FALLEN STAR HOW DOPE IS THAT
oh and the dude who wields it is called the sword of the morning no biggie

they look like targaryens, but as far as we know they don’t actually have valyrian blood (its possible they are lysene though, as lys has several examples of people who look like the valyrians**)
the only other targ-looking houses are the celtigars of claw isle and the velaryons of driftmark, but they are valyrian-blooded, so daynes are SPECIAL

best buddies with rhaegar. lil jaime saw him as a great mentor Nd still admires him to this day
as of adwd arthur dayne is still the last sword of the morning bc (therefore edric dayne cannot wield dawn)(yet) and he died at the tower of joy (dornish place, where lyanna and rhaegar supposedly eloped or had fun times or somethin)
but arthur dayne is amazin ok we love arthur dayne lots and lots and ltos
he was a bit of a sasspot and amazin knight
he came rly close to winning the tourney of harrenhal and killed the smiling knight
described as the deadliest knight in that set of the kingsguard (reminder that the kg at the time was made up of ‘white bull’ gerold hightower, oberyns uncle prince lewyn martell, + oswell whent)
this quote from neddard stark sums him up nicely

ashara
MY personal fave. ashara was renowned for her beauty and had dark hair and ‘laughing purple eyes’ (but i have a headcanon she was actually super smart and so was elia martell)(ALSO EXTREMELY IMPORTANT CHARACTER but thats not what we are here about)
if u do not believe in most popular asoiaf theory r+l=j (idk why you wouldnt its pretty valid) then its pretty likely u accept ashara dayne as a possible mama bear for broody bb jon snow
barristan selmy had a major crush on her as did neddard and/or brandon stark
allegedly ashara committed suicide shortly after the fight at the tower of joy (the one that neddard has flashbacks about, like, all the time)
 there are several possible reasons for this: barristan selmy claims she had a stillborn baby from being dishonoured at harrenhal and was distraught at either the dishonouring or the stillborn baby. other reasons include her friend princess elias murder and her brother arthur dayne had been killed and ned stark had recently returned his sword to starfall. after she jumped a body was never found
i have a lot of ashara and arthur feelings and her life makes me v sad like rveryone she loved dieD but
i guess i make it pretty clear that i think her death was faked
idk if shes still alive in present asoiaf time though
but ashara dayne is p much rad

allyria
we don’t know much about her but she was betrothed to beric dondarrion (remember him? hes the dude with the eyepatch in tv show)
APART from that allyria dayne is a mystery, however we know she is a lil one
this is because she was too young to marry beric which hints that she was a lil tater tot at the time of roberts rebellion
because of this, she probably doesnt have the greatest memory of ashara and arthur (and neither does edric, unless edrics dad was old enough to remember them and told him about it)
because of this, most of what we know about house dayne comes from jaime, arianne, barristan and arya

the biggest dayne asshole
hes rly hot even though he has different coloured hair a la jaqen h’ghar
arianne martell wants him to be her baby daddy
he calls himself darkstar bc hes precious like that

a real cutie pie i like edders alot
he was cut from the show but he was originally squire to beric dondarrion leader of the brotherhood without banners
hes called ned for short which makes arya sad and mad. smad
he is milk brothers with jon snow (basically that means they drank the same breastmilk apparently its a tru bond) and strongly believes that jon is the son of their milk mother (wylla, servant to house dayne)
gendry gets suuuuuuuuuuuuper jealous of him talking to arya
arya throws an apple at gendrys head
anyway
he looks the most valyrian/lysene of all the daynes we know of that there are canonical physical appearances of (which is exactly three)
hes pretty nice other than that
we dunno where he is by now (and by now i mean as of adwd) but i rly think hes comin back i believe it i do

other trivia!
edric daynes father was a sibling to arthur, allyria and ashara, but is obviously dead as ned is the current lord of starfall (and we know gerold cannot be lord of starfall for two reasons: one, he is a cousin to arthur and neds dad is arthurs brother and two, he is introduced as a knight of starfall but a dayne of high hermitage)
oberyn and elia martell stopped at starfall when they were on their lil quest
at the time of ser duncan the tall the sword of the morning was ser ulrick dayne
starfall joins winterfell (starks, obvs) and evenfall hall (house tarth) as a castle that has a suffix that is a variation of past or present tense of fall

at tourney of harrenhal ashara danced with jon connington, my dear neddard, and some other dudes(lots of em apparently)
i just realised SOMEETHING house dondarrions sigil is purple field also and its a lightning bolt v similar to a shooting star OOOO idk if that means anything btu um yeah anyways

in conclusion i think the daynes are really important and i also think that dawn is lightbringer oops and they are all gonna be SUPER important in next books ** lysono maar has violet eyes and light coloured hair, and book-canon salladhor saan and doreah (danys handmaiden) both have similar features though they were PoC in the show (which im not complaining about, i loved it ehe)
